• Facility Maintenance staff who must maintain and trouble-shoot heat pumps
  • Any agency or anyone thinking of purchasing or installing a heat pump system
  • Maintenance Supervisors and Facility Managers
  • Foremen and Lead People

This workshop will provide participants with solid introduction to both AIR and WATER source heat pumps.  Under the supervision of the workshop leader, who is highly skilled in the HVAC field with many years of experience in the industry, participants will gain an understanding of the various types of heat pumps and how they operate.  Heat pumps have been rated by the EPA as the most energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive of all space conditioning systems.  Geothermal heat pumps can save 40 to 70 percent in heating costs and 30 to 50 percent in cooling costs compared to conventional heating and cooling systems.  To operate efficiently, they must be properly serviced and maintained, which will be thoroughly covered in this workshop.

Attendees will gain the knowledge necessary to understand how heat pumps operate, and how the water, air and refrigerants flow in modern heat pumps, as well as the function of the individual components.

Each workshop participant will also receive a TSA certificate, and a detailed workbook that clearly explains [how to] perform heat pump preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and make minor repairs. The workbooks can later be used as reference on the job.

Day One, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm,   Day Two, 8:00 am – Noon

Major topics that will be covered during this training:

  1. Benefits of using heat pumps and situations where they are most effective
  2. How heat pumps operate
  3. Understanding how heat pump components such as compressors, suction line accumulators, reversing valves, expansion and check vales, shell and tube, tube-in-tube water cooled heat exchangers, defrost timers, outdoor thermostats, space thermostats wire color codes, bi-flow driers work
  4. Types of heat pumps – Air and water source, air to air, water to air and water to water, packaged, two and three piece split systems
  5. Heat pump thermostat functions, wiring diagrams and unit electrical diagrams
  6. How to troubleshoot a heat pump using the electrical diagrams
  7. Types of ground loops: vertical, horizontal and slinky loops, open and closed loops
  8. Soil conductivity, moisture content, and bore hole depths
  9. System operation, gauge port connection, service gauge manifolds and refrigerant charging methods
  10. Energy Cost – Green energy, and Co2 reduction benefits, Coefficient of Performance (COP), Energy Efficiency Ratios (EER), typical utility cost saving using heat pumps
  11. Typical cost comparisons between gas, electrical, and heat pump heating and cooling systems
  12. Understanding the basics of heat transfer
  13. System capacity versus building load and balance point
  14. Super heat measurement and its importance to compressor life
  15. Troubleshooting four-way valves
